Blues Cup match report – 28th September 2016

The Meds kicked off the 2016/17 rugby season in the wet, cold shadow of the Millennium Stadium. UWIC provided the opposition in the first of two Blues Cup matches at the Arms Park. Was this a chance, perhaps, to redeem ourselves from the convincing defeat to them in the pre-season match the Friday before? A quick look at the final scoreboard would suggest otherwise, with the refrigerator units taking the game by 38 points to none. The game was quick on the 4G turf and unfortunately we could not keep out the waves of pressure piled on by the Met boys. Dekker got decked and a stud to the face paved the way for Luppers who put in a solid performance at 12.

Wounded, but prepared, we picked ourselves up and dusted ourselves off in the 15-minute interval before the 3rd/4th place playoff against USW. Not to be disheartened by the departures of Brock and Cam from the playing field, the Meds put on a strong team display to grit out a 7-7 draw. A special mention goes out to Zack who set up our only try of the game with a 50-yard dash as if somebody was trying to steal his chicken korma at curry social. Youngy got his hands on it and offloade

d it to Owain who slid under the posts to lift the crowd to their feet. USW responded however and the 2nd half became a bit of a stalemate with both sides just lacking the penetrative power to break the game line. If only Ryan had been there to help us eat our way through their defence.

Overall there were plenty of positives to be taken from the tournament, with an abundant supply of onlooking Freshmen eager for playing time and an opportunity to wear that Cardiff Medics RFC badge. As the boys gear up for the first BUCS fixtures of the year, the new players look forward to a weekend runout against Clwb Rygbi. Competition for places is stronger than ever.
