Club History

Having gained WRU status in 1946, with the club being formed apporximately 40 years earlier, Cardiff Medicals RFC have been the representative club of students studying medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, nursing and other healthcare degrees in Cardiff for over 100 years. From the days of the Welsh National School of Medicine, through to the University of Wales College of Medicine and to the present day Cardiff University School of Medicine, Cardiff Meds have always competed at the highest level of both Medical School and University rugby.

Currently we have two teams, competing regularly on Wednesday afternoons in the British Universities & Colleges Sports leagues. The first XV compete in Premier B, against teams from Cardiff Met, Hartpury, Reading and Bath. Our second XV, having been undefeated have gained promotion to Division two West, and are looking to have another successful season, with the added opportunity of playing arch-rivals, Cardiff University.

Medical school rugby is very important to us. As well as annual fixtures against United (London) Hospitals RFC and Dublin Medical Schools, we compete in the National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) competition and are looking to continue our domination, already having an impressive record of 17 wins in the 21 years since the tournament began.

Though rugby is our cause, it is the social aspect of our club that defines us. Life friendships are made between members, and the Club has always, and still does, all it can to support its members and ensure that all are looked after in every aspect of their student lives. This is evident by the strong ties still maintained with past members all of whom are encouraged to keep in touch and are welcome at all club events.

We are ever grateful for the support provided by the ‘Old Boys’.
