Cardiff Meds vs Ferndale RFC (SWALEC) 08/10/2016

On a glorious Saturday afternoon, the meds, all feeling fresh from the night before, assembled at Llarnrhumney to face Ferndale RFC in the first round of the SWALEC bowl. After a warm up, lacking bear crawls and shuttle-runs but full of hamstring stretches from Spikey, the meds were ready for kick off. The first points fell to Ferndale with an easy penalty from in front of the posts, however credit must go to the Ferndale 10 who kicked the ball in true 80’s fashion by making a hole in the ground. The meds bounced back quickly, asserting pressure and eventually breaking the line after some good feet from Owain beating a few defenders before passing to Zak who ran a well-timed support line. (5-3). The meds claimed the kick off and immediately put the pressure back onto the opposition, a penalty brought the opportunity to kick to touch for the lineout. With the lineout successful the forwards managed to form a driving mall, which rumbled, leading to the second try of the game for Zak. (12-3). Once again the kick off was well received by the meds forwards and after a few phases of play and some barbarian like offloading the meds found themselves once again deep in Ferndale’s 22. A line out provided good quality ball for the backs to play with, a well worked backs move was finished by Rhods after a superb hard line cut the Ferndale defence open. (19-3). Some ill-discipline from Ferndale saw two of their players put into the bin for foul play at the breakdown. The meds were unable to capitalise on the two player advantage and it was Ferndale who began to get into the game. The meds defence was strong however and the score remained the same until half time.

The second half saw some substitutions made, with some freshers coming on to make meds debuts thus providing some fresh legs to the team. The game become a bit disjointed with neither team managing to enforce their authority, until a breakaway try was scored by the Ferndale winger in the corner. (19-8). The game then carried on in the same fashion with the majority of the play taking part in the centre of the field. A well taken try by the meds scrum half, fresher peter on debut, after he spotted a gap on the blindside of a breakdown gave the meds a good cushion to play on. (26-8). Ferndale however were not done, they responded with a driving maul which was converted to bring the score line to within 11. (26-15). With 7 to go the meds were looking strong and ready to close the game out until some outrageous behaviour from Conal saw him sin binned, lucky to not get red, leaving the meds a player short for the remainder of the game. Ferndale went on to score from a turned over scrum leaving a margin of just 4. (26-22). The meds were able to grind out the final few minutes leaving the final score a win for the meds. A good result with some outstanding performances from the new freshers.
