Match report 1st XV vs Exeter 4th XV BUCS 05/10/2016

Our first BUCS game of the season came against one of the strongest teams we will play this year in Exeter 4s. Despite having a shortened warm up and with 3 freshers in the squad the medics started well putting early pressure on Exeter with some good flowing rugby. However, a loose pass later and we were under our own posts 7-0 down having played all the rugby. This seemed to kick the medics into gear as we applied more pressure giving us a lineout on their 5-metre line. Some great work from the forwards in the maul allowed scrum half, Ollie Young, to fall over the line and with a conversion from Conal Watterson the scores were tied. Soon enough we found ourselves 14-7 down due to some sloppy play allowing for another opportunistic try for Exeter. This, and some indiscipline including a high tackle from Omar that would most likely be seen in a UFC fight, gave Exeter the confidence to try and kill the game but with some heroic defence from 1-15 the medics held out until half time.

The second half started poorly conceding 3 points early on but the try of the game soon followed. With the medics deep in their own half, Conal saw an opportunity kicked through and gathered before offloading to Longy who took a whole 5 strides to cover 40m and touch down bringing the gap to just 3 points. Special mention to Jackson and Dan, man of the match and fresher of the day for putting in huge shifts for the medics but unfortunately the scores remained unchanged for the rest of the game.

A hugely competitive game and a losing bonus point but definitely a feeling that the medics have a lot more to give.
