British Universities and Colleges Sports provides a high standard of competition, and is the mainstay of our season. Both Cardiff Medicals RFC teams compete in BUCS leagues with home and away matches being played on Wednesday afternoons throughout the year.

Our 1st XV play in Division 1 West and Our second XV are playing in Division Three West.

Additionally, both teams are involved in BUCS knockout competitions, also played throughout the season.

The National Association of Medical Schools rugby cup is a competition close to the heart of Cardiff Medicals RFC. Played on Saturdays, it provides a great opportunity to lock horns with other medical school rugby clubs from around the country and fight it out for the title of the nation’s premier medical school.

Our record in this competition speaks for itself, already having an impressive 17 wins since the tournament began, 22 years ago.

Playing in the Welsh Cup provides a much different challenge. The quick youthful opponents of university rugby are replaced by hard running, hard tackling men of Welsh club rugby. The competition allows us to showcase our own brand of expansive free-flowing rugby around Wales, whilst the physicality that we encounter serves us well in other competitions. Last season we were unfortunate to lose at the quarter-final stages.

Two teams competing in a total of 6 competitions provides plentiful rugby opportunity and player development. Competition for a starting jersey is fierce, with players moving in both directions between our two squads!
